A very rare pair of French hand painted antique French Chinoiserie wall tiles in the style of Georges Martel of De Sevres France. Made in earthenware and hand painted in a delightful pink and green palette, each piece features a figure in in Oriental dress in a stylised garden bearing a flag. Featuring stylised pink flowers in each corner, accompanied by deep green foliage and mustard-yellow accents.
This lovely pair probably dating around 1900, but possibly made a little earlier, during the revival of the fashion for Chinoiserie styles from the mid 19th C up to around 1920. Lovely size for display, or for use as highlight tiles in a vintage tile scheme; or put them to use as trivets in the kitchen. With their charming colours these fabulous antiques will be perfectly at home in any vintage, cottage, or farmhouse-inspired interior.
Unmarked and undated but recognizably in the style of the renowned ceramics maker Georges Martel of de Sevres who made work in this style, with many stamped examples existing.
Priced and sold as a pair.
Dimensions: 14cm x 14cm
Thickness: 1cm
Condition is lightly distressed antique condition - no cracks, some chips from the edges, signs of use (scratches, scrapes, etc) on both pieces. No discoloration, colour remains crisp and clear. One piece has a very large flake chip from the back (not visible from the front). Please see photos for condition.
Two wonderful French faience Chinoiserie tiles to display and enjoy!
