A matching set of 6 French antique canisters in classic Art Nouveau style. This rare set, including lids, was made c1910-1920 in polychrome transferware faience (earthenware / ironstone) by renowned French faience design house Longchamp, France in their "Treillage" pattern. Bearing a few marks of time, but still lovely on display and usable for small storage needs.
Featuring classic Art Nouveau transferware designs and a classic Parisian-style font (similar to that you will see on the Paris Metro signs from the period), this set will be a stunning and chic vintage addition to any kitchen, especially in the French Country / farmhouse style. The colour is a beautiful deep teal blue on an aged white ground, accented with pops of yellow and orange in the fruit baskets which feature on the both the pots and lids. A cheerful and elegant design!
In descending size as follows from largest to smallest:
"Farine" - 18cm high x 12cm wide x 12cm deep
"Sucre" - 16.5cm high x 11cm wide x 11cm deep
"Cafe" - 15.5cm high x 10cm wide x 10cm deep
"The" - 14.5cm high x 9cm wide x 9cm deep
"Poivre" - 12cm high x 8cm wide x 8cm deep
"Epices" - 11cm high x 7cm wide x 7cm deep
(All sizes at widest / tallest point, including lids)
Stamped on the base with the maker and design.
Showing signs of a long life, this set has suffered some areas of damage as follows:
- 2 lids of this set have sustained damage with a large chip at the rear of the 'Café' lid; and a crack through the 'Thé' lid plus an accompanying chip (this crack has been (inexpertly) repaired so the lid remains usable, though visibly cracked.
- The 'Café' pot has a small Y shaped hairline crack in the base (not visible on display)
- Other signs of use and wear are also present, including minor areas of discoloration, flea bite glaze losses, and crazing of the glaze; as to be expected with the age of the set.
Since all of the pots and 3 of the lids remain in good condition, taken as a whole, the damage is not too noticeable (especially if the set is displayed on a shelf) and remains in satisfactory vintage condition with a patina of age and use. Overall this set remains very attractive despite its marks of time - a lovely way add authentic French charm to your vintage kitchen!
Feel free to ask any questions - more photos available on request :)
