A delightful shabby Austrian-made antique enamel salt box in white enamel with navy blue and gold line decoration and the word 'Sel' in a fabulously French ornate script- classic vintage farmhouse style!
Made for the French market, this is a sweet example of a salt canister, with many extra embellishments to elevate its classic blue and white colorway. Sculpted panels, hand painted elements and a fancy calligraphic script make this a little grander than most other examples, small touches that make this the perfect statement piece for a French vintage, farmhouse, shabby chic or cottage style kitchen.
Marked on the base with B. F. Cie Austria with a shield and wreath mark.
20cm high including back panel
13.5cm wide
10cm depth at widest point
Condition is shabby, missing its lid - the exterior presents as lightly distressed but, as is quite common with salt boxes, the interior is rusted. There is a split in the joint on one side of the back panel with an approx 1-2mm gap along the back edge inside the box. The back and the base are still solidly attached. Otherwise, the exterior is in satisfactory vintage condition with some loss of enamel, scratches, marks here and there, signs of use and a long life in a working kitchen. No dents or major damage (apart from the missing lid), all remaining panels still well attached. Despite no longer being ideal to store your salt, this looks great on display and will be a lovely décor piece with tons of character.
An extremely decorative and unusual object of history and charm - a lovely piece of French enamelware to take pride of place on your kitchen wall, shelves or bench!
Feel free to ask any questions :) I am happy to combine shipping!
