An elegant French antique soup tureen ('soupiere') in navy blue transferware. Classic French vintage style in a gorgeous floral transfer print, with stylised floral vining border. This is a lovely example of French transferware of the early Art Nouveau period, made in high quality earthenware c1900-1910 by renowned the Faiencerie de Gien, France
This lovely piece is classic piece of French design, perfect French Country style. A stunning floral design in a deep navy blue. Stunning sculpted handles. Marked for the famous factory of Gien on the base, along with the stamped pattern name 'Ephemere' as part of the maker's mark.
The design is open and airy, with a sinuous repeating border pattern which evokes the naturalistic vining of the flowers. The design features lovely stylized forms with triangular flower heads, each of which has two-tone shading to add depth and interest to the pattern, along with the sinuous forms typical of the designs of the Art Nouveau period.
The soupiere is in good antique condition for its age, with a tight hairline crack of approx 10cm near the center of its lid - the lid remains solid with no movement at the crack. Otherwise, normal signs of use, no chips and no cracks to the base. Some manufacturing irregularities including color variations, spots under the glaze as to be expected for manufacturing processes of the time. Lovely creamy ivory color, a few areas of darker tea stain discoloration in places. Light overall crazing to be expected for age of 110 years - in great condition for display or light use.

Approx. 253cm diameter across the body of the bowl at widest point
22.5cm high (approx) including lid handle (base is 13.5cm high without the lid)
