An elegant and rare French antique small plate set of 4 in soft teal blue transferware by dating from the late 19th century (mark dated from 1894). Classic vintage style French architecture plates depicting Chateaux of France designed by the faincerie of Leon Graves of Clairefontaine, France.
A lovely and rare set made in a soft teal blue transferware, on a white paste. The designs feature the Chateaux of Chantilly, Clenonceaux and Chambord (x2). Stylistically placed in the late Aesthetic Movement, while showing influences of Art Nouveau motifs in the stylized designs and motifs.
The plates are in satisfactory antique condition and show some signs of their great age with a few tiny 'fleabite' glaze losses, scrapes / signs of use and wear (scratches, scuffs), some very light crazing of the glazes, a little discoloration. Also the following damage to note for individual pieces -
- 'Chantilly' in very good condition, just some tiny areas of discoloration
- 'Chenoneaux' has a fine hairline crack to its base, no penetrating and not visible from the front.
- 'Chambord 1' has a very fine hairline at the rim.
- 'Chambord 2' has a glaze bubble with discoloration and a hairline at the rim (a small amount of movement at this crack)
Although bearing signs of time, the plates will display nicely on the wall or plate rack as the imperfections are not visible other than on close inspection. Please see photos for condition and feel free to ask any questions.
The form is somewhere in between a small dinner plate and a soup plate with the dimensions 22cm x 2.5cm. It would have been meant for desserts or salads; they would be lovely to serve petit fours or other delicate fancies.
A sweet way to add authentic French antique style to your home!
Feel free to ask any questions :)
