A stunning and rare antique ironstone cake stand from Staffordshire makers Pinder, Bourne and Co, in polychrome transferware in an unusual palette of grey and red. From a sought after design 'Cellini', an example from this pattern is currently on show at the Victoria and Albert Museum in South Kensington, London. In excellent condition with only light signs of use and wear. An elegant piece for a discerning collector, or to go into service on your table.
Featuring a very beautiful hand coloured polychrome transfer printed design in a formal repeating pattern. Unusual colourway of light and dark greys with brick red embellishments, on a crisp white ground. A fabulous piece of Staffordshire pottery, from the late 19th century (mark in use from 1862-1882).
Featuring a subtly molded edge with very light scalloped detail. Marked on the base for P. B & Co with a stamped crown and laurel mark, and a handpainted decorator mark in red('xx 8017')
Condition is excellent antique condition. No chips or cracks, light signs of use overall, very little crazing, no stains. A few very tiny flea bite glaze losses at the outer rim. It also possible (though I am by no means certain) that there may have been a translucent gold overglaze on the outer rim - if that is so, there is very little left of that finish. Other than this wear there is nothing to detract from continued use or appearance on display.
Dimensions: 23cm diameter x 6.5cm high. Plate is approximately 3cm deep at the center.
