Aged butterfly floral antique ironstone tureen, U&C Sarreguemines 'Papillon' hand colored polychrome transferware c1875 Aesthetic Movement

A stunning hand-coloured French antique ironstone soupiere on a garden theme with butterfly and lovely floral designs. Rendered in delicate hand-applied polychrome colouring with a hand painted border. Made by the famous faienceries of U&C (Utzschneider and Cie) of Sarreguemines France. This soup tureen from the 'Papillon' pattern is a fabulous example of polychrome ceramic design from the period of the late Arts & Crafts / Aesthetic Movement, showing influences of the early Art Nouveau.

With deep burgundy red transferware decoration, hand colored in deep tones of green, yellow and blue, this soupiere is a beautiful example of polychrome transferware. Classic French vintage style in a gorgeous floral transfer print which has been hand colored along with a hand painted border. Depicting a garden floral spray of daisies and grasses, finished with stunning blue butterflies. Along with the hand painted elements, the subtle sculptural form and ornate handles mark this piece as a high-quality production. Stylistically placed in the late Aesthetic Movement with subtle hints of the emerging Art Nouveau.

The intricate design rests on an antique white / ivory ground which sets off the colours beautifully. Lighty scalloped edge on its hand painted base finish this stunning design. A lovely and rare design, perfect for serving on special occasions, or for display.

Showing signs of a well-worn life, the condition is satisfactory for its age. Aside from the obvious lack of a lid, both handles have small chips and one of the handles has been cracked and re-glued with a few small chips at the break. Otherwise, it presents very well, the colour is crisp and clear without significant staining, no other cracks or chips and no apparent crazing.
