Aged antique water jug / tall pitcher, large size, French design of ribbons & flowers, red transferware 'Fontagnes' Sarreguemines, France

Gorgeous shabby antique water pitcher / tall jug (French 'broc') from the French faienceries of Sarreguemines, France. Beautiful decoration in red and white transferware in a romantic floral pattern with ribbons and bunches of flowers. Originally a water jug for washing, this piece has sustained many areas of damage, but would still serve as an excellent tall vase, centerpiece or decorative embellishment for your home.

This piece dates to the late 1800s and still presents very well, with its ivory white ground and lovely red transferware decoration shining through a patina of age. The transferware printing is very detailed with almost the entire body of the jug covered in beautiful floral sprays in a non-repeating pattern - every part of the design is different with diverse arrangements of flowers in each of the floral vignettes, plus beautiful ribbons incorporated - so much detail to enjoy in this piece, even to the hand painted handle with beautiful molded form!

The pattern is from the late Aesthetic Movement, and shows classic Victorian style in the flowers and onrate molded form. Accented around the rim by gorgeous repeating pattern of stylised acanthus and trellis border. This jug is an unapologetically intricate piece - a tour-de-force of transferware of the time.

In shabby condition, with many areas of damage - a large chip and accompanying crack of approx 10cm on the side of the rim; two other small shallow glaze losses to the rim; a glaze loss to the underside of the spout; a hairline crack of approx 5cm next to the handle; a series of chips around the footrim at the base of the jug. Otherwise, the jug is still watertight, minimal discoloration, very light age-appropriate crazing of the glaze. Still usable as a vase and displays well despite the damaged areas, with a patina of age and beauty. Please see photos for condition and all damaged areas and feel free to ask any questions.

This example is unmarked, but is easily recognizable as the famous pattern 'Fontagnes' from Sarreguemines.
