Vintage French Art Deco Ironstone Plate Set: Choisy-le-roi Green Leaf Dessert Plates & Cake Stand

A gorgeous SET of 8 antique Choisy-le-roi French vintage ironstone side plates PLUS a matching cake stand. Forest green on crisp white with a stencil painted border design of stylized floral and foliate designs on crisp white. This lovely early Art Deco pattern features grape leaves and fruits vining under a line of alternating diamond and seeds on the outer rim. From H. Boulenger & Cie, Choisey le Roi, c 1920. In very good, usable condition.

This beautiful design is made in fine earthenware, known in France as terre de fer ("iron earth"), with an ivory white paste. The border decoration features a charming design which shows clear influences of the emerging Art Deco, although probably predating this by a few years. The backstamps diverge between the plates and the cake stand, perhaps indicating that the set was created at the cusp of the name change from H. Boulenger & Cie to HBCM (being H. Boulenger, Creil & Montereau) which happened in 1920. A lovely design, in a classic palette of forest green transferware on a white ground, emerging from an important juncture in design history - from France the home of Art Deco.

Condition is good-very good condition - no chips or cracks, some signs of use including a few light scratches / scrapes. All over crazing as appropriate for age of 100+ years. Three plates have some age spots of rust-colored marks / light tea staining - please see photos for condition. Nothing to prevent display or continued use.

Marked on the base for H. Boulanger et Cie, of Choisy-le-roi France, for the cake stand; all the plates are marked for HBCM. This indicates these were made around the time of the name change occurring in 1920 when the factory was acquired by Creil et Montereau. This set would therefore be classified as an early example of Art Deco / Style Moderne, developed in France in the late 1910s, as the style is truly regarded to have properly emerged during the Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes held in Paris in 1925.
