A SET of 14 vintage plates by Washington, Stoke on Trent, England in a classic India Tree design, a staple design of Staffordshire pottery since the early Victorian era.
Stamped for Washington pottery with a mark in use after 1935, but before dishwasher safe markings introduced in the late 1960s. Hand painted decoration, primarily in pink, sepia and green, with blue and yellow accents, over a dark ochre transferware printed outline.
Sold as a SET of 14 plates
This small set is comprised of 3 soup bowls, 2 dinner plates, 4 dessert or breakfast plates and 6 side plates. A beautiful display set, for dessert or tea party service, or perhaps a small dinner service for 2 to 6 places.
This classic Indian Tree (or India Tree) pattern originated in Staffordshire, possibly from textile patterns imported from India around 1800. The center of the pattern includes the twisting branch of an ancient tree and a partial landscape with exotic flowers and leaves. This scene is surrounded by a very ornate and detailed Greek key border, and non-repeating floral motif vignettes. The color is rendered by hand over a dark ochre transfer outline. Different flower and foliate elements form part of the pattern, with variable spray compositions adding to the depth and interest. A lovely example of intricate transferware augmented by skilled hand painting.
In excellent vintage condition - No chips, cracks or significant scratches, light signs of use and some minor crazing, spots and smears of the transferware pattern, as usual for the more hand-made processes of the time. In truly fabulous condition for age, and ready to be put to use!
